Coloardo Baptists Provide Clean Water

In 2011, a group of Baptists in Colorado decided to work with Baptists in Zimbabwe to identify areas where it would be helpful to drill clean water wells. To date, 10 wells have been drilled and 5 more are slated to be drilled in the next month or so.

Colorado Baptists have also provided a large water storage tank for the old folk’s home in Gweru, Zimbabwe as the city water was very irregular and some days they had no water. Now when the city water is running it fills up the large tank so they have plenty of water for their daily needs.

Recently, Pastor Jim came from Colorado to see the progress that is being made. He was honored at several places where the wells are now producing water. He was also at the “Grand Opening” of the well at the Zvikombe Primary School. For the first time in the school’s 22 year existence teachers and students will have clean water to drink. They had been surviving on water from the river several miles away and small uncovered water seeps.

The children did skits about the importance of safe drinking water and some of the kids wrote poems about all the things people need water for.

Many thanks to the Colorado Baptists who have helped to support this project!
Pray that the people in the churches who have received a well which will provide clean drinking water for their communities, will also share the “living water of Jesus Christ” with their neighbors.

Zimbabwe Baptist Convention Leadership

Thank you for your continued prayers for our Baptist Convention in Zimbabwe.
Pastor J. Tembo is our new Executive Director.

Pastor L. Chiombera is our new Youth Director. (Pictured below in the black suit.)

Pastor I. Mabvumba remains as our Evangelism Director.

God is at work doing great things through them. There is an excitement among our pastors and churches that we have not seen in some time. Praise God for the work He is doing and purposes to do this year!

Nyama Baptist Church, Lower Gweru

Nyama Baptist Church was one of two Baptist churches which were planted a number of years ago under the evangelistic efforts of Mkoba Baptist Church in Gweru.

About 13 years ago, volunteers from Locust Grove, Georgia came to the place where Nyama Baptist Church had been given a small plot of land. They poured a concrete foundation and put up poles and a roof over the foundation. After that, members of the church made their own bricks.

Then they bricked up the walls and put in windows and doors.

The church grew slowly at first, but over time, began to multiply their membership.

Suddenly they were bursting at the seams!

So they tore down one wall of their church building, doubled the foundation size. Then they made more bricks and bricked up the new wall around the enlarged foundation, also including windows and a door.

We are thankful for this church which is growing spiritually as well as physically!

Worship in Zimbabwe

In our Baptist Churches in Zimbabwe, worship is an exciting and vibrant experience. Being event rather than time oriented the event of worship takes precedence over everything else for the day.

A drummer usually sets the pace for the singing and dancing.

When a pastor prepares to lead the people in worship through the preaching of God’s Word, he will disappoint his listeners (they will feel cheated) if he doesn’t preach for at least 45 minutes to an hour. On special worship days, more than one person may be asked to preach.

The giving of gifts is also an important part of worship. In many of the rural churches the people don’t have much money to put into the offering plate, but they bring chickens, and fruit and produce from their gardens.

After church, the people fellowship as they sit and share a meal together. The meal is always accompanied by laughter and fun as community is celebrated.

Then it is time to pack up the pots, dishes, utensils, and unused food to take home!
